Kia ora True West Adventure Race Teams,

True Facts - December 1st 2023

Kia ora True West Adventure Race Teams,

Welcome to the 2023 edition!

I’m Nathan Fa'avae, your Race Director, and I can't wait to kick off this incredible event in the stunning landscape of Hokitika. The warmth and enthusiasm of the locals have been overwhelming as they eagerly anticipate experiencing their beloved homelands alongside all of you.

Registration and Briefing; The briefing will take place at Lazar Park, Scout and Guide Hall 147-149 Hall Street. We understand that some of you may encounter road closures in the Otira Gorge during weekdays, potentially affecting your travel to Hokitika. If this poses a challenge in reaching the race registration or briefings, please let us know, and we'll work out an alternative plan to ensure your participation.

Weather Outlook; As we approach the event, the long-range forecast presents dynamic weather systems that fluctuate daily. While the forecast isn't definitive yet, it could swing either way, emphasising the importance of preparedness. The West Coast is known for deluge downpours that might impact the race course or necessitate changes before the event starts. Our core staff will be onsite all next week, vigilantly monitoring the weather and prioritising safety in determining the race routes. Our goal is to showcase the incredible 'A' courses, but adaptability will be key. Rest assured, we'll strive to offer the best adventure race courses possible.

Environment Preservation; Throughout the race, you'll traverse wilderness areas rich in biodiversity and significance. Let's collectively uphold the legacy of care for these precious landscapes. Proper toilet practices are crucial; Transition Areas will have facilities, and some race routes feature public toilets—please use these options whenever available. In the event of emergencies, bury waste responsibly, a handspan deep and at least 50 meters away from waterways. Let's maintain the integrity of these spaces by picking up any litter we encounter. We're grateful for the support of the local Iwi, granting us access to these lands. It underscores the need for utmost respect toward the environment—land and water alike.

Supporting Hokitika; I encourage you to support local businesses during your stay. Your patronage not only adds value to their livelihoods but also contributes positively to the local community. Your spending in Hokitika embodies the importance of hosting events in these regions.

Course Information; Check out the table below for distances, stage order, and estimated times to aid in your preparation and packing. Further details will be available at registration, and on our website. For 48-hour teams without Support Crews, a separate table outlines bin locations and required gear. This will streamline your preparation once you receive the course maps.

Traveling Safely; Stay updated by following our True West Facebook page for regular updates. We'll keep the website current and might send out another email before the event. Wishing you all the best in your final week of preparation—we can't wait to welcome you to the West Coast for an unforgettable adventure!
